Milwaukee Authors

Milwaukee Authors is a website dedicated to showcasing the works and talent of authors from Milwaukee and Southeast Wisconsin. Their list includes authors such as John Gurda (“The Making of Milwaukee” and “Cream City Chronicles”) and Paul Salsini (“The Cielo” and “Sparrow’s Revenge.”) However, they’re missing a couple of my favorite Milwaukee authors, who also happen to be some of my favorite professors in the professional writing program at Mount Mary College.

Ann Angel, author of such works as “Amy Tan: Weaver of Asian-American Tales” and “Reader’s Guide to Sandra Cisnero’s House on Mango Street” has recently released her latest work, “Janis Joplin: Rise Up Singing.” I was lucky enough to attend Angel’s Sept. 28 book launch and signing at the Little Read Book in Wauwatosa where I picked up my own signed copy of the book.

You’ll likely hear me talk a lot about Ann, as she is a highly respected faculty member in my graduate writing program (she was one of two 2010 recipients of MMC’s Teaching Excellence Award.) I was in Ann’s workshop in the novel class last spring and am currently taking advanced workshop and research in short fiction. It amazes me how little I really knew about writing before taking these two courses. I believe I have a natural talent for writing, but am just now “learning the craft.”

Another writer/instructor from MMC is JoAnne Early Macken. Macken is a children’s author who has written several children’s books. I have only been in one technical writing course with Macken, but I hear she also teaches a great poetry class. I personally wouldn’t claim to be a poet, but I want to take her course to push myself out of my comfort zone, so to speak.
